HISTORIC HOUSE IN TRANQUIL LOCATION WITH SUNNY SOUTH FACING PATIO IN MEDIEVAL VILLAGE OF OLARGUES, HAUT LANGUEDOC
Sleeps 4 in two large bedrooms.

L’ANCIEN COUVENT
Rue de la Place,
34390 Olargues, France.
Originally a medieval convent or religious house, this charming and spacious (200 m²)stone built property later served as the village bakery and in more recent years housed the workshop of “Bernard Le Bougie” the local candle-maker. Now a private residence this house is available for letting to holidaymakers throughout the year. It sleeps 4 people comfortably and is situated in a quiet cobbled street in the heart of the village of Olargues. Access is via a narrow street, a 2-minute walk from the car park, although temporary parking is available at the front of the house for unloading cases and shopping.
The Old Convent retains much of its original character with wooden beams, flagstones and exposed stonework throughout, together with modern amenities and double glazing. It is decorated simply but to a high standard, with maximum use of wood, stone and whitewashed walls to complement the elegant architecture of the property.

Facilities: Large vaulted entrance hall(17.5m²), ground floor reception room (27.5m²) with original Languedoc fireplace leading to rear south facing courtyard. First floor dining room/lounge (29m²) and adjacent kitchen (9m²) with exterior balcony (6m²). Double bedroom (18 m²) and bathroom (9.5m²). Second floor bedroom (30 m²) with 2 single beds. Heating by electric radiators.
The accommodation is on three floors. The front door opens on to the large vaulted reception room, which offers a cool and comfortable refuge from the summer sun. A high ceilinged vaulted corridor featuring an original stone “evier” made from local marble with flag stoned floor leads to another large reception room with exposed beams and a charming open fireplace, used in the recent past for cooking the bounty brought home by the village hunters.

This was the original village bakery and still houses the stone bread oven where villagers brought their bread and “pommes de terres boulangères” for communal cooking. It now serves as a family room or second lounge with stone benches ranged around the walls. To the rear of this room is a pleasant and sunny south facing patio for al fresco eating, sun bathing and, of course, the evening aperitif.

An impressive flag stone staircase leads up to the first floor where the traditional dining room/lounge with large French windows opens out to the southern aspect of the property. The dining area is equipped with all the essentials and furnished with a dining table and chairs and a large sideboard. The lounge area has a large and comfortable sofa ready for holiday relaxation.

The adjacent modern fitted kitchen is small but well equipped with refrigerator, cooker, microwave etc. and has a pleasant exterior balcony overlooking a neighbouring courtyard. This provides a cool and quiet corner away from the midday sun and is also ideal for open air breakfasts. Leaving the dining area, at the top of the staircase another elegant vaulted corridor meanders towards the large, light and airy double bedroom, which looks out onto the cobbled street at the front of the house.

A wrought iron and cotton draped wardrobe, together with a hanging rail provide storage. Exposed beams, woodwork and original features throughout combine to contribute to the charming ambiance on this floor. A modern bathroom with W.C, sink, bath and washing machine completes the accommodation here.
A wooden staircase leads from the first to the second floor. At the top there is a large south facing bedroom with exposed beams housing two single beds.

The sunny aspect of this room with its large windows overlooking the ground floor patio, provide plenty of light together with delightful views over the village rooftops to the south and west of Olargues. A large wood and cotton draped cupboard and chest of drawers provide storage.
